It all started with ‘what if’

I finally decided to tackle that long overdue spring clean of my desk. As I opened up the draws it hit me – notebook upon notebook. Meeting notes, ideas, plans – all out of sight and out of mind. But now in plain sight it really hit home.

We are all making changes to become more sustainable and as new parents, the idea of leaving the world in a better place really rings true.

But writing is what we are taught, it’s what we grew up on. Whilst most businesses are moving to online and paperless working, the need for handwritten notes clearly remains. Whether that is PA’s needing to take speedy notes, sales teams getting that new client brief or onsite workers detailing job specifications. It is just quicker and more convenient to handwrite than type or use a tablet.

As the shredder whizzed away, a thought crossed my mind. What if we could combine the ability to handwrite notes, but not create paper waste? We began on a mission, well more of an obsession, to find a solution to this challenge.

Paper waste: The hard truth

The more we researched about paper waste, the more convinced we were that this really is a problem that needs fixing.

Despite the drive for sustainability and paperless working, global paper consumption is actually continuing to rise. And not only does paper waste cause deforestation, its production uses huge amounts of energy and water.

  • 10,000 sheets of paper are used by the average UK office worker each year.*
  • 103,000 double decker buses is the volume of paper waste buried in the UK each year.**
  • 9.9 million tonnes of paper is used in the UK each year. It takes 24 trees to make one tonne of paper.***

But for businesses, the cost is greater than only environmental. The costs of secure shredding, rising stationary costs and the reputational and financial risk of confidential data loss can be huge.
